GM classic variants

Description

The two mobile suits pictured here are variants of the RGM-79 GM mobile suit. On the left is the RGM-79L GM Light Armor, and on the right is the TGM-79 GM Trainer.

The GM Light Armor was developed late in the One-Year-War, as an attempt to produce a fast attack mobile suit that could be used in hit-and-run raids on Zeon installations and space fleets. To do this, a good percentage of the GM's armor was removed, particularly from the shoulders and ankles. The result was a significant increase in speed and maneuverability. The GM Light Armor was also lightly-armed, and carried only a beam saber and a hand-held beam gun, which packed about as much punch as the RX-78-2 Gundam's beam rifle. Because of its high power output, the beam gun's ammunition was limited. Despite this, the GM Light Armor gained a good deal of popularity among Earth Federation pilots, especially those who had started out as fighter pilots.

The TGM-79 GM Trainer was designed as a cheap and effective way to train former fighter pilots in the use of mobile suits. This was indeed necessary, as the GM was the first EFSF mobile suit to be used by the regular forces. In order to cut costs even more than the standard GM, the GM Trainer's armor was much weaker and thus made the machine unsuitable for combat. The cockpit was modified to accommodate both a trainee and an instructor. The trainee would sit in a standard cockpit in the lower chest region, while the instructor would be seated above the trainee in a compartment equipped with a window. As the war waged on, many GM Trainers were reallocated to other duties such as engineering and construction.

I’m surprised that on the box art for the mg GM Sniper Custom it shows three gm light armor types so I’m not sure if it’s there for backdrop or that we may see the gm light armor in the future and if the later is true I hope we get the trainer type too
