I just started watching English subs of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. It's great. They're space pirates who invoke the powers (and costumes..!) of all 34 previous Super Sentai series, and even have actors who played the old heroes appear in various episodes. It's a sort of meta-series that celebrates 35 years of Super Sentai.
I don't think Power Rangers here in the states could really pull off its own version of this series. Considering the fact that what we know as the first Power Rangers series was the 16th Super Sentai in Japan, and that the first Power Rangers compacted several Super Sentai series into one long stretch (totally skipping the Dairanger and Kakuranger costumes, as well), I am hard-pressed to think of a way a writing team could adapt the show without SEVERELY hacking it up (which I guess they would do, wouldn't they?).
In any case, Super Sentai is a billion times better than Power Rangers. Sure, it's still kid-targeted, but you never hear the monotone "hiyaaaaah" that Power Rangers is so infamous for. They take this shit seriously in Japan, and their actors can emote like nobody's business.
So don't laugh. It's awesome.
Shut up.
